Ultimate X-men

“ Ultimate X-men” is a new comic series about the X-men. It is basically a “ what if?” universe thing.

Scott’s past is not revealed but to name a few then we know that Jean had a normal childhood until her mutation kicked in and she started hearing thoughts. We also know that Ororo was a car thief. In this universe all the X-men are teenagers. Scott is 18 years old and leads the team.

Scott from Ultimate X-men

The X-men are

Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the X-men.
Power: Extremely powerful telepath and has some telekenetic ability as well (evinced in issue #1, and notably in issue #6)
Background: Previously married to Moira McTaggart (issue #16 ff.); one child: David (Proteus). He apparently left Moira when the going got rough. Moira is bitter and accusatory and views Charles as having abandoned her. She heads up a rehab hospital in Scotland, with mutants such as Proteus, who are too delicate or dangerous for normal society. The X-Men were previously unaware of this other "school."

Scott Summers/ Cyclops; leader of the X-men
Power: Optic blasts from his eyes
Background: orphan (specified, issue #15), no other background yet. Xavier saved Scott from a lynchmob, one week before he got Jean and thus Scott was the first to join the X-men (issue #21).
He was apparently around 15/16 when he joined. Age: 8 at one point, probably 19 by now.
Love interest: Crush on Jean Grey for the past 2-3 years; she has recently expressed a growing interest in him, and in issue #17, lets him know she's available. Her teammates doubt her sincerity.

Jean Grey/ Marvel Girl
Power: Telepathy and telekinesis
Background: Normal childhood and upbringing until she started hearing thoughts, when she was committed to an institution (issue #15). Xavier apparently rescued her from there around 16, and began training her.
Age: 19
Love interest: Logan ( flirting, kissing and sex) They had a falling out in issue #6, and have been quits since. She renewed an interest in Cyclops, whom she professes to prefer, although her teammates (notably Storm) have expressed doubts. She apologized to Logan in issue #11, and they have been on speaking terms since, although she claims romantic disinterest and even disdain for him.

Ororo Monroe/ Storm
Power: Ability to control the weather, particularly lightning; she's also (finally) gained her ability to fly on air currents (issue #8 forward)
Background: Car thief. Apparently born in Morocco, from whence she came to the US. Until recently, she was an illegal immigrant and uneductated (issue #15).
Age: 19
Love interest: Hank (committed relationship)

Peter Rasputin / Colossus
Power: Ability to turn his body into steel
Background: Left a poor family (Peter has both younger brothers and sisters) in Russian to make money in the US. Unable to find work he joined the Russian Mafia. He sent everything he earned home to his family. When his mutation was discovered he joined the X-men.
Age: 19
Love interest: none obvious. Millar has strongly intimated in online conversation that Peter is gay and hints in the book have backed this up. Peter and Logan apparently have a good friendship, though whether there's any romantic interest there is complete speculation. He and Bobby are also quite close.

Robert ( Bobby) Drake / Iceman
Power: Ability to turn his body into ice and create things of ice
Background: Ran away from home when he first developed his mutation in fear for his family’s safety.
Age: 15
Love interest: Unnamed girlfriend one year older, whose existence Xavier caused him to forget (issue #8).

Hank McCoy/ Beast
Power: Augmented strength and agility, also intelligence and (since Weapon X) heightened "animal" senses, like Logan.
Background: Fled an abusive home; his father was reputedly and alcoholic and beat him. When he was wounded and Scott called his mother, she refused to speak to him. Jean recruited him for the X-Men in issue #1, where he was either on the street or at least not beholden to anyone.
Age: 19
Love interest: Ororo (committed relationship)

Logan / Wolverine
Power: Enhanced senses, claws from his knuckles, healing factor, metal skeleton
Background: A part of the Weapon X project. Trained assassin sent to kill Xavier, but in issue #6, he turns coat and sides with the X-Men. Thereafter, he is an on-again, off-again member, until after rescuing them from Weapon-X. Now appears to be a permanent member and is even engaged in some "school" assignments, despite his age.
Age: Looks around 30 years. Probably much older. Sabretooth intimates in issue #11 that he was married and had a child.
Love interest: Jean, although currently on the outs. Unclear if he's still interested or not. Jean's continued interest in *him* has been suggested far more strongly than his in her.

“ You know Wolverine. Holding off on a kill just mean’s there’s a woman he’s trying to get into bed first.”

Logan is obviously older than all the others yet still have a thing for Jean who is 19. Bobby is the youngest at 15.

All the X-men have gotten new attitudes and outfits:

Scott:
Attitude: arcastic, sometimes bitter, prickly, emotionally reserved, and doubtful of the Dream at times, but mostly committed.
Outfit: Black/gold uniform. Since Weapon-X, his visor has become considerably smaller and thinner, fitting above his ears, instead of over them. He's been seen wearing three different glasses, but even out of uniform, seems to prefer the visor. One version of his glasses is thin enough that his eyes can be seen (a first!). They're very dark brown/black and slightly slanted. His hair ranges (depending on colorist) from dark brown to chestnut. Military short and spiked on top. Out of uniform, Scott is usually wearing some shade of black or grey in shirt or pants.

Jean:
Attitude: self-assured, somewhat patronizing towards others at times. Flirts a lot. Tells dirty jokes ( says Peter) She's the professor's obvious favorite.
Outfit: The shortest costume seen in a while. Black with bared stomach, arms and outer thighs. Multiple earrings in each ear (though not always worn), 1 navel ring, glasses and short copper-red hair.

Hank:
Attitude: Humorous, observant, somewhat reserved but not stand-offish.
Outfit: lack/gold uniform. Always wears glasses, usually in some tint of yellow or blue. After issue #4, his hair was turned blue, due to organ transplants, and after genetic tampering in Weapon X, his entire body hair turned blue, and he transformed into the more familiar "blue beast," and acquired fangs. His eyes remain blue. Out of uniform, he seems to have a penchant for Hawaiian shirts!

Ororo:
Attitude: Sarcastic, quick temper, self-assured, more observant than she seems and more compassionate than one would expect, began as very doubtful of Xavier's plans but appears to have changed her mind.
Outfit: black/gold uniform; when out of uniform, she will often wear some shade of lavender. Seems her trademark color. She usually wears her hair in a ponytail. ( Unlike Jean, Ororo wears her new outfit with a sense of dignity)

Bobby:
Attitude: the team tease/trickster, bounces between insecurity and overconfidence.
Outfit: has varied. He's gone from iced-up body with a headband and armband to a black and red uniform, back to the iced body. Non-uniform clothes are teen-standard.

Peter:
Attitude: Quiet, highly observant, the team consensus builder (to quote Lelia). He may still have his artistic streak (seen playing guitar in issue #6), but not much has been made of it. His commitment to the team went from skeptical to more committed, but even now, he may harbor some questions, after seeing a mind-wiped Magneto (issue #15).
Outfit: Steel body, black/gold uniform. Normal clothing are big sweatshirts and slacks.

Logan:
Attitude: Sarcastic at times, hardened but has come to care for and be protective of his teammates, somewhat carefree, can be violent but appears to want to change that.
Outfit: blue/gold uniform with X on chest. Leather jacket, shirt and pants, plus cowboy hat. Definite "country" bent in clothing.
Thanks much to Minisinoo for the updated info on the X-men

The Brotherhood has their base in “ the Savage Land”. Among the members of the Brotherhood are;

Magneto; leader
Power: Ability to control metal

Quicksilver/ Pietro
Power: The ability to move very quickly
Note: Quicksilver is Wanda’s twin brother and the son of Magneto (mentioned in Ultimate X-men 5, maybe earlier)

Scarlet Witch/ Wanda
Power: Can fly, hex powers ( think purple lighting)
Note: Wanda is Quicksilver’s twin sister ( see Ultimate X-men 5) and Magneto’s daughter ( she calls Magneto “father” in Ultimate X-men 4, maybe even in earlier issues)

Mastermind
Power: The ability to create illusions

Toad
Power: Athlete, tongue

Blob
Power: Strong, invulnerability

Ultimate X-men 1. Cover shows Logan

The X-men and Logan are introduced. Jean breaks Ororo out of jail. Though she is reluctant Ororo joins the X-men. Logan comes to Xavier`s school.

Ultimate X-men 2. Cover shows all the X-men

With Logan the X-men battle what turns out to be military people from Logan´s past.

Ultimate X-men 3. Cover shows Scott

The President’s daughter have been kidnapped by Magneto and his Brotherhood. The Professor sends the X-men to rescue her, saying that the President will owe them a favour. They leave though under protest. Working together the girl is rescued but as Jean and Logan gets the girl to safety Hank/Beast is buried under some rubbles. Ororo fears that he is dead.

Ultimate X-men 4. Cover shows Jean Grey

Scott and Bobby are under heavy fire. Peter protects Ororo and Beast. Scott gets him and Bobby out of the tight spot by firing an optic blast; wounding or killing their shooters. Scott and Bobby come to Ororo, Peter and Hank as do Magneto. Scott warns Magneto;
“ Back off, Magneto. I don’t care who you are or what you can do. Take one more step towards my people and I`ll burn a hole in you like a doughnut, mister.”

Scott warns Magneto off

Magneto responds by holding a speech on why he is right and Xavier wrong. Magneto moves the stones away from Hank and lets the X-men leave with him. Xavier and Jean do some psychic surgery on Hank and he survives. Logan and Jean kiss passionately in the garden. Scott tells Xavier that he doubts his dream and wants to leave. Xavier tries to manipulate his mind to make him stay.
The following conversation take place:
Xavier ( using his powers on Scott): “ Why don’t you go back to your room and unpack, and we’ll say nothing else about this unfortunate little episode, eh?”
Scott: “ Professor….are you doing something to my mind?”
Xavier: “ Just releasing a peasant hormone into your bloodstream to calm those rising tempers, my friend. We were about to exchange six very unpleasant sentences, and I know for a fact that a reasonable boy like you couldn’t possibly mean the fifth one.”
Scott: “ Can you read what I’m thinking NOW, professor?”
Xavier: “ Language like THAT betrays a limited vocabulary, Cyclops”
Scott: “ Well, right now I’m feeling monosyllabic, man. Give me a call when you get tired of sucking up to the evil empire.”

Xavier using his powers on Scott

Scott leaves. He steals the Blackbird and goes to Magneto who welcomes him with open arms.

Magneto welcomes Scott

So, that ends issue 4 and a great issue it was. I hope they’ll let Scott stay on the “dark side” for a while…and then I really would like to see Scott and Wanda get together. I mean, Jean have Logan, why can’t Scott have someone?

Ultimate X-men 5. Cover shows Peter

Scott picks some members of the Brotherhood up in the Blackbird. He is mad at Quicksilver because he blew up the building before the deadline was up for the humans to flee. Wanda tries to calm him by putting her hand on his shoulder. Scott flies them back to their base. Logan and Jean sleep together and Jean says she’s got a feeling that Scott leaving the team has something to do with her (real clever girl). Scott and Magneto talk about killing humans and Scott says he will not kill. Wanda and Pietro have a sweet sister/brother moment. Xavier cannot convince the President to not try and destroy Magneto’s base. Sentinels attack Magneto’s base. Magneto deprograms the Sentinels to kill only humans. The war has begun as Scott calls Xavier with Wanda and Pietro standing behind him. This apparently ends Scott’s turn to the dark side, way too early I think.

Ultimate X-men 6. Cover shows Magneto

The conclusion of the Ultimate X-Men's first adventure. Magneto takes his war to the very steps of the White House as the Sentinels attack Washington D.C. As mass hysteria explodes in the streets of the nation's capital, the X-Men must somehow defeat an army of the Master of Magnetism's zealots - one of whom, until very recently, was on their side.

Ultimate X-men 7. Cover shows Kurt

Part 1 in of the storyline which will show us the origin of Logan/ Wolverine.
He came to destroy the X-Men from within - now he`s one of them. But who is the man named Logan? Where is he from? How did that unbreakable metal get bonded to his skeleton? Beginning here, Wolverine and his teammates will hunt the mysteries of his past - but what they discover could shatter the fragile alliance they`ve built... and alienate the one person the unstable mutant cares about most!

Okay, I have one BIG complaint; Scott said 2 sentences in the whole God damn book! Other than that look for Kurt playing Rambo and the introduction of Rogue. Both Kurt and Rogue are prisoners at Weapon X and both have been tortured there as Logan was. This also mean that Logan and Rogue will have a lot in common………….Logan/Rogue fans; you are entering what could be Heaven! [just as long as Scott and Ororo ends up together I have no complaints]

Ultimate X-men 8. Cover shows Ororo

Part 2 of the storyline in which we get to know Logan`s past.
As the X-Men investigate Logan`s past, the team is confronted by another member of the Weapon X Program! And watching from the shadows are two even more dangerous operatives!

This issue had some great moments. We start out with Logan and Scott having a "friendly" chat with Boris ( leader of the Russian mob Peter was a member of). They convince him to release Peter from his contract and leave his family in peace. Some nice scenes with Logan and Scott who work together and seem to be friends; Scott even expresses his concern for Logan as he chooses to leave the X-men again to go search for more info on the Weapon X program. Back at the mansion; Hank and Ororo make out ( I still have hopes for Ororo changing her mind and being with Scott though I do fear this will mean that Scott is stuck with Jean. Again. What a shame. I had expected so much more from this series). Xavier and Jean delete a momory from Bobby´s mind as he had told a girl of the school and the X-men. The Weapon X guys attack the school; Hank try to protect Ororo but in the end, as the general figured, only Scott is left standing. Sabretooth, Juggernaut, Kurt and Rogue are part of the attack force. Kurt steals Scott´s visor and he is defeated. But they forgot Bobby. Rogue obsorbs Marvel Girl´s powers and defeats Bobby by letting his mind feel the pain of a appendix operation he had last year but without the anesthetic! ( UGH! She´s one evil girl, this one. Poor Bobby). The Waepon X program wanted Logan but now takes all the X-men to their base.
As I said; a good issue though I hope they´ll let Scott also play a big and important part in issue 9 and not let Logan be able to handle everything himself. TBC and the best of luck to our friends; I think they are going to need it.

Ultimate X-men 9. Cover shows Bobby

Part 3 of the storyline in which we get to know Logan’s past.
While Professor X and his X-Men are "re-educated" in the Weapon X facility, the nation`s most dangerous spy is asked to lead a group of Weapon X mutants on a top secret, Third World mission. His name is Nick Fury - and he`s none too comfortable with how the government is treating his super-powered colleagues! But with the interests of the Free World at stake, does he have a choice?
Rumour: Nick Fury shows up in this issue!
In this issue we see the X-men as prisoners. Bobby is scared, Peter and Ororo are tortured and Scott is forced to lead missions with Kurt and Jean for their captors. They try to brainwash Xavier in the meantime. Things look grim but Logan is on his way. To the resue!

Ultimate X-men 10. Cover shows all the X-men

More on the X-men as prisoners. Their captors want Jean to kill a man. Sher doesn't want to. They torture Scott and say they'll kill him if she refuses. Scott says she shall not do it. In the end she kills the man

Ultimate X-men 11. Cover shows Logan

Logan is taken as prisoner in the Weapon X HQ. He and Jean talks. Logan fights Victor who says he killed Logan's wife and child but Logan doesn't know if it's true as his memories were taken from him. Wanda and the Brotherhood free the X-men

Ultimate X-men 12. Cover shows Xavier

The X-men and Brotherhood fight together against the Weapon X. Everyone but Jean wants to kill their captors. Jean says no and convinces Scott to do likewise but Ororo wants revenge because the Weapon X has made Hank, her boyfriend, into a blue hairy...Beastlike man. However Kurt won't let Ororo become a murderer and saves the man she wanted to kill. Logan shows up with Nick Fury who saved him from the Weapon X program 2 years earlier. Then the X-men go home and Xavier says that he really didn't kill Magneto. Big surprise there. And he says everything goes as he has planned

Ultimate X-men 13. Cover shows Remy/Gambit

This is Remy's story. Remy lives on the street, surviving by showing card tricks, stealing and sleeping with women who want his body but doesn't want people to see her with him. Remy takes a small girl into his care who has just lost her mother. He tries to find her uncle for her but one night she's stolen from him and Remy wants to go find her though he has been warned against it. This issue is in my opinion one of the best ever. If you love Remy, like I do, I'm sure you'll enjoy this issue of a hero in the making

Ultimate X-men 14. Cover shows Remy/Gambit

Remy’s story continues. He tries to find the little girl he was protecting. During his search Xavier approaches him and asks him to join him.
Xavier says “You would be with others like you. You’d have hot food, a warm bed…”
Remy replies “And mebbe late night visit or two when ev’yone else be sleepin’?”
Gotta love this guy! Quick lines that hides so much heartache and pain. All what a fanfic writer could get out of that line…. Obviously Remy has lead a very hard life; he may even have been raped or sexually abused in his earlier days. Back to the action Remy finds the guys who holds the little girl and questions one of them about the girl
“You not tell? You die. She hurt? You die. She dead? You die slow.”
Isn’t that a great line? I’m in love!
Anyway, Remy of course succeeds in freeing the little girl. He asks some friends to look after her as he has made some very powerful enemies in freeing her. Remy makes an umbrella fly her high into the air and then he disappears. Later than night the little girl cries because she thinks she did something wrong to make Remy leave. Suddenly a card energizes to make a heart for her and then it’s all over. WOW. What a story. Loved it a lot and I highly recommend it. Now, all I’m waiting for is as equally or better (meaning much more tortured *EG*) past for Scott.

Please don’t take this without asking. Want to add something? A character you would like to see up here? Please e-mail me.
