Cosmo Article on Mr. Marsdenīs role in X-men and beyond:
Given his matinee idol looks and class-clown charm, it's no surprise that James Marsden has seen more than his share of on-screen action.
"I could cut together a full 15-minute reel just of me making out with girls in the backseats of cars," laughs the 26-year-old actor best known from TV's Second Noah and the film Disturbing Behavior. These days, Marsden is moving up to the driver's seat, starring in three new films: the college thriller Gossip, the black comedy Sugar and Spice, and this summer's big-budget adaptation of the comic book X-Men.
Born and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the actor moved to Hollywood seven years ago and within two months landed his first job, a small part on the pilot of The Nanny. It's been bigger and better ever since, but Marsden keeps it all down to earth. "Eventually this will all go away, so I enjoy it while it's here." And with a look at his chiseled jaw, you know plenty of women are happy to go along for the ride.
Cosmo: Growing up, where was the place in your town where people would go to make out in cars?
James Marsden: We'd go to Lake Hefner and park. One time, a cop caught me making out in the backseat with my girlfriend. I was mortified.
C: You and your live-in girlfriend have been dating for four years. That's a long time in Hollywood. What's your secret?
JM: Have a good time and sincerely enjoy each other's company. I don't think it has to be more complicated than that.
C: Are you looking forward to getting married and having kids?
JM: Yeah. I don't know when, but I definitely want that in my future.
C: What did you think of the women in Hollywood when you first moved out here seven years ago?
JM: I was freaked out by their boldness. I'd have girls pinching my butt in bars. I was like, "I'm supposed to do that to you."
C: What's been your most memorable star sighting?
JM: I saw Demi Moore a while ago at Planet Hollywood, and she actually talked to me! She asked if I was having a good time.
C: She wasn't one of the girls who pinched your butt though, was she?
JM: No. I wish she was.
C: What happens in Gossip?
JM: Three college roommates decide, as a school project, to create a rumor about somebody and document it as it evolves. But something horrible ends up happening.
C: Have you heard any good gossip about yourself lately?
JM: Nothing bad. There was something saying that I wear blue contacts, which I don't.
C: Have you ever been in a tabloid?
JM: No. I haven't made it yet.
C: You're nobody until you've had at least one alien love child.
JM: I am going to have my own action figure for X-Men!
C: Is your doll smooth down there or anatomically correct?
JM: It was unfinished when I saw it, so maybe they're going to add something later. Perhaps it'll be an attachable accessory?
C: You also have Sugar and Spice opposite American Beauty's Mena Suvari. What part do you play in that?
JM: I play a high school quarterback who's a little bit of an idiot. He knocks up the head cheerleader.
C: Were you into sports when you were in high school?
JM: Until freshman year, but then everyone grew to 300 pounds except me, so I went into drama.
C: When did girls take interest?
JM: My senior year. I was voted third runner-up for Most Attractive and it came out of left field. I thought, No way. They must have tallied the votes incorrectly.
C: How long do you think you can do these high school movies?
JM: I don't know. Obviously in Sugar and Spice I play a high schooler, but I don't want to be like Grease, where you're 50 playing 17. God knows, I'm way past high school.
C: What actors do you admire?
JM: I think Brad Pitt's great and a lot of people don't give him enough credit because they look at someone who's attractive and say, "He can't act." But he's proved himself.
C: Can you relate to that dilemma?
JM: I don't want to sound like I'm whining because everyone who'll read it will go, "Oh, please." But I lose more jobs because the producers are going for someone "quirky."
C: So tell us, what's the quirkiest you've ever had to be for a role?
JM: One of my first jobs was a series called Boogie's Diner, and I wore a hot dog suit. It was so mortifying; Like, wow. I moved to Hollywood to be a hot dog?"
